Here I am in South Africa, at the furthest point south in Africa.

There are baboons out on the cape, sometimes they just hang out on the side of the road

And sometimes they hang out on top of my car!  He wouldn't get off, and as you can see, I couldn't get in.
I waited for quite a while before his majesty, the alpha male, gave up his throne.

This is one of the most amazing sights ever.  I have seen lots of ostriches in the desert, but
grazing on grasses by the ocean?  Never.

A male and female.

The Cape of Good Hope

The bay near Cape Point (L) and the Cape Point Lighthouse (R)

Me at Cape Point (L) and an elan on the Cape (R)

I left the Cape at sunset and was driving back when I remember that I had wanted to see the penguin
beach.  Well, it was dark but I went down to the beach and saw a couple of penguins.  I could not get
close enough to get a good picture and they eventually walked off.  I went up into the rocks and thought
I could hear one of them peeking out at me.  I could not see at all so I took a picture to see if I was right.
This little guy sat there for about six flash pictures that I took and then waddled off.  I told him that
my daughters would be so thankful for his patience.  What a little champ.

This, of course, is the real (?) reason I was in South Africa, presenting a paper at the
conference for the International Society for Theoretical Psychology

One of the beautiful sunsets in Capetown, with the Southern Cross on the upper right.

On the way back, I had a day in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  It was so hot I could hardly believe it.
I took a boat like the ones on the right to cross the creek on the way back to the airport.

They had a cool museum with pictures with pictures of the first emir
family of Dubai.  This is the young sheikh.

Some oysters with pearls and one of the old sailing ships.  These pictures are all from the 1950's or thereabout.
